Aiani: Getting to Know the Capital of Elimiotis and Upper Macedonia.
This is the most important Educational Programme. It contains two main units with the following content:
1st UNIT
a) Archaeology – definition – aims. Development – landmarks – seasons – branches of archaeology – specialist fields – related sciences.
b) Review of the archaeological research at Aiani prior to the 1983 excavations. Archaeological geography and historical topography.
c) Aiani – Elimeia – Elimiotis – Upper Macedonia: sources and antiquities.
d) The character and peculiarities of the archaeological research in Upper Macedonia: historical conclusions.
2nd UNIT
a) Material remains – ‘what’ and ‘how’ on site. On-the-spot instruction: how to identify an archaeological site and date and describe finds.
b) Familiarisation with excavated antiquities and carrying-out of an excavation in the outdoor excavation programme using models of ancient artefacts, or possible participation in a dig during a normal excavation season.
c) Visits to the archaeological sites and practical exercises in identifying antiquities.
